Borodyanka kindergarten Pinokkio will have its own solar system

On 18 April 2024, the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) signed a trilateral Memorandum of Cooperation with the Borodyanka Village Council and the “Brave” charity foundation. Within the framework of the partnership, a small solar power plant will be installed on the roof of the reconstructed Pinocchio kindergarten in Borodyanka.

The town of Borodyanka in the Kyiv region bore some of the heaviest blows in the first weeks of the invasion of russian troops into Ukraine, and some parts of the town are still significantly damaged. The Pinocchio kindergarten was also damaged as a result of the russian invasion of the town and has been undergoing restoration efforts with the assistance of benefactors, including support from the Republic of Lithuania.

The next step towards opening the kindergarten for children on September 1, 2024, is to ensure its energy independence, which will become possible thanks to the charitable initiative of the WWEA “Renewables4Ukraine” and the financial support of the Finnish non-profit organization “EKOenergy”.

“The solar system will be up and running by the end of May 2024, not only ensuring independent electricity supply to the kindergarten but also resulting in cost savings that would typically be allocated for electricity payments,” said Galyna Shmidt, Vice President of WWEA, who signed the Memorandum on behalf of the WWEA.

“This kindergarten will be equipped with a 10 kW solar system, designed to be ‘smart,’ as it not only harnesses solar energy but also stores it in batteries to power the facility during periods of low sunlight,” said Andriy Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board. “Through this system, both the children and parents of this kindergarten will witness firsthand the efficiency of utilizing local energy sources such as solar and wind. By fostering decentralized energy sources, we not only contribute to the national energy system but also liberate ourselves from fuel imports from the aggressor nation.”

The installation of the solar system in the kindergarten will be carried out by the “Green System” company.
