On 17 February 2025, the Chairman of the UWEA Board, Andriy Konechenkov, visited the town of Borodianka, Kyiv region, to inaugurate a 15 kW autonomous solar power plant installed at the Kazka Kindergarten.
This solar system was deployed under the #Renewables4Ukraine initiative, launched by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) and the Global100RE platform, in partnership with UWEA. The project was funded by the Finnish non-profit organization EKOenergy, with additional support from the Vidvazhnykh (Brave) charity organization. This marks the second successfully completed solar installation in Borodianka – a town that suffered severe destruction during the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.
The installation was carried out by specialists from Green System LLC. According to Andriy Konechenkov, this solar power system is the largest one installed under the #Renewables4Ukraine initiative in Irpin, Borodyanka, and other affected cities: “This is a real alternative to diesel generators, which would otherwise be the only backup power source here. Diesel generators are noisy, consume fuel, and require constant maintenance. In contrast, solar power operates silently, requires no fuel expenses, and is an environmentally friendly solution. We will continue our work to ensure that even more social institutions in war-affected regions gain access to renewable energy.”

The kindergarten’s director, Nataliia Gerasymenko, emphasized that the new solar system will not only power the facility but also provide lighting for its bomb shelter, ensuring safety for children during air raids: “Previously, whenever an air raid alarm sounded, we had to take the children to the shelter – often in complete darkness, using only flashlights. It was extremely inconvenient, especially for young children. Now, thanks to this project, we will have light and ventilation even during power outages. This is a major step forward in ensuring the safety of our children.”
